Bohemian violin, Prague school, 1903

Bohemian violin, Prague school, 1903

€1,700.00

This violin has a beautifully carved lion’s head in place of a scroll. The violin was built in 1903 in Prague and bears a handwritten label that is difficult to read (Joseph Le…). As with many violins of the Prague school, Stainer's influence is clearly reflected in the instrument. Not only the lion's head (which was also occasionally used by Stainer), but also the relatively broad lower back, higher arching of the belly than the back and varnish ranging in color from amber to orange-red. The violin, individual in style, was built by a skilled violin maker. This can be seen in the finely carved lion's head, the sharp inlay and the tasteful varnish that accentuates the quality of the wood used. The violin has a beautiful, full, powerful sound and is rich in overtones (sound clip below).
