Mathias Heinicke 3/4 violin, 1925
A magnificent master violin made by Hungarian-born luthier Mathias Heinicke. In his younger years, Heinicke worked in Budapest and Berlin, after which he settled in Bohemia. There, he became a prominent representative of Bohemian violin making. Heinicke claimed to have been taught by the renowned Italian luthier Eugenio Degani, a claim he also made on his labels (see photo). Heinicke is known for his first-class copies of the great Italian masters and subsequently evolved into his own personal model. He is also known for his use of beautiful tonewoods, using centuries-old wood from old buildings and churches. This is beautifully reflected in the magnificent, deep grain of the one-piece maple back. He used his own recipes for the varnish, with tasteful red and orange-brown tones. This is also beautifully reflected in the instrument, which has developed a lovely patina in several areas. The violin is labeled and branded on the inside of the back. What's special is that this is a 3/4 violin. Violins of this size and quality are rarely found. This makes the violin—with its deep, radiant, complex, and far-reaching tone—very suitable for young, talented students. The violin is in perfect condition and has been played relatively little, as it has been in the family for 100 years.
