Ewald Wiese, Rostock 1950

€1,900.00

The German violin maker Ewald Wiese drew significant inspiration from Alessandro Gagliano, the founder of the Neapolitan school. Gagliano made instruments modeled after the Cremonese masters Amati and Stradivarius, but also imbued his instruments with a strong personality of his own: an elegant, broad curve in the lower half of the body, wide and open F-holes, and a relatively flat arching of the front and back plates. These stylistic features are beautifully reflected in this violin by Ewald Wiese. The broad top plate features a characteristic fine grain that widens towards the sides. A single piece of maple with a mild, intriguing flame pattern has been used for the back. The finely carved scroll and sharp purfling demonstrate excellent craftsmanship. The beautiful transparent golden-brown varnish over a yellow base gives the violin a distinctive appearance befitting its large, open, and characterful sound.

Body length: 35.6 cm | String length: 32.7 cm

Sound characteristics: large, open
