This old German-Bohemian violin, with its beautiful antique appearance, was likely made around 1900. The model is inspired by that of Jacobus Stainer, a style very popular among Vogtland/Bohemian violin makers at the time. Characteristic are the slender, elegant F-holes and the tasteful amber varnish. The tonewood used is of high quality, with the beautiful maple back immediately striking. The wide purfling and striking scroll, which is very finely carved, demonstrate the craftsmanship of the unknown maker. The violin is in good condition and has been professionally set-upt in the past by the renowned Utrecht violin maker Otto Stam (see photo of the bridge). The violin has also been ‘‘re-necked’’ in the past. The sound meets the requirements of advanced violinists: powerful, radiant, open, and resonant. Because I have this violin on consignment, it is not available for rent. A nice detail is that the original papers from the purchase of the violin in 1960 have been preserved.
Body length: 35.6 cm | String length: 32.8 cm
Sound characteristics: powerful, radiant, open, resonant
