Inside the violin is a label by Domenico Montagnana, Cremonae Venetus, 1723. This label should primarily be seen as a tribute to this great Italian master. Montagnana was a contemporary of Stradivarius and Guarnerius and is considered one of the best builders of his generation. He built violins according to his own pattern, but is especially famous for his cellos. Inspired by Montagnana, this unknown builder has made an exceptionally beautiful instrument. The typical elements of Montagnana are unmistakably visible. The shapes are less graceful than Stradivarius, for example, but very characterful; the top and bottom of the blades are flatter, while the curves in the middle are longer. The F-holes are more of the Guarnerius design, but are slightly narrower. The spruce top is made of very beautiful, balanced spruce. The one-piece maple back has a mild flaming. The scroll is relatively narrow and elegant. The choice for the Montagnana model already indicates that it is not a simple violin. That also shows the wear spot to the right of the key on the top. This is the result of intensive playing on the violin in the high positions. Often a sign that the violin has a good sound and has been played for a long time by a professional violinist. The sound of this violin can compete with the more expensive violins in our range and is particularly powerful, mature and clear (sound clip below). Because it is not a real Italian, but in our opinion the violin was built in Saxony around 1900, the price is attractive.
